Geothermal pools, basalt beaches and the road that circles it all
Iceland Hotel Stays is a curated guide to the whole country, not just Reykjavik. We cover the capital and its Laugavegur and Old Harbour neighbourhoods, the south coast around Vik and Reynisfjara, the Golden Circle towns of Selfoss and Fludir, the Snaefellsnes peninsula, and the northern hub of Akureyri. The angle is simple: hot springs, black beaches and the Ring Road, which is how most people actually experience Iceland once they leave the airport bus behind.
We are not the booking engine. When you tap See price, you are handed to app.impt.io, which aggregates over 8 million hotels at the same price or better than booking direct. Every booking funds one verified tonne of carbon removal at no extra cost to you. The room, the cancellation policy and the loyalty points are identical to anywhere else you might book. Our job is to tell you honestly which town to sleep in and which hotel is worth the money.
Reykjavik is the default base and rightly so: it is the only real city, the Flybus from Keflavik terminates at BSI, and everything from puffin tours to Blue Lagoon transfers pick up from central hotels. Stay near Hallgrimskirkja or Laugavegur if you want to walk to restaurants like Dill or Grillmarkadurinn. The Old Harbour is quieter and closer to whale watching. Rooms here run about $180 to $280 in summer and $110 to $160 off-season.

Before you book
The questions we get most, answered with this month’s numbers.
Iceland is expensive by European standards, but off-peak (November, early December, January to March excluding Christmas) you can find guesthouse doubles from around $90 to $130 a night. The cheapest bases are Akureyri in the north and the small guesthouses along the south coast near Vik and Hvolsvollur, where rates run well below Reykjavik prices.
September to mid-October and late April to May balance decent weather with lower prices, roughly $130 to $180 a night for a mid-range Reykjavik hotel. June to August is peak, when the same room hits $220 to $320 and books out months ahead. February and March are cheapest but you need winter driving skills for the Ring Road.
Reykjavik is the obvious base for a short trip, ideally around Laugavegur or the Old Harbour for walkable restaurants and Blue Lagoon day trips. Vik on the south coast suits Ring Road drivers who want black beaches and Reynisfjara nearby. Akureyri works if you fly into the north or want a quieter second week away from the crowds.
You need a car. There are no passenger trains, and buses only cover limited routes. A small rental from Keflavik runs about $55 to $90 a day off-season, more in summer. The Flybus to Reykjavik is around $35 one way. Reykjavik to Vik is 2.5 hours, to Akureyri is 5 hours via Route 1, the Ring Road.
Two things. First, weather changes hourly and F-roads (mountain roads) are closed to normal cars and shut entirely from October to June, so a 2WD rental cannot legally reach the highlands. Second, the Blue Lagoon must be pre-booked, often days ahead in summer; standard entry is around $70 and walk-ups are turned away.
